The Global Sports Reporting Analysis

After examining two newspaper websites, I first looked at the Cambrian News, which is a European paper that can be found at: http://www.cambrian-news.co.uk/. Then I looked at my local paper the NY Daily News that can be found at: http://www.nydailynews.com/.  In comparing the papers I found many differences;  the sports that the Cambrian News covers, were football (soccer), rugby, golf and motor sports which were their top sports, they also advertised cricket and other where there was no coverage.  The Daily News covered baseball, the Super Bowl XLVI, basketball, hockey, college, I-Team, high school and more sports which included golf, boxing and running. As I was comparing the two papers, I was able to clearly see the different sports departments, which the Daily News has more. In addition, it was also clear that football (soccer) and rugby are the most popular sport during this time due to the coverage they receive and the most current articles.

The links  provided by the Cambrian News presented were Yc y Cymro Arlein (the paper in Welsh), shopping guide, follow us on twitter, We’re on Facebook, County Echo Online (for the latest news in Fishguard and the surrounding area), Winter on Wheels (Your Cambrian News Winter Motoring 2011 supplement) and a Home Supplement. The Daily News links are the scoreboard, leaders, standings, teams, players, player news, odds and transactions. As well as, the columnists, photos, most popular, videos of game highlights and blogs for each sport advertised.

The Cambrian News posted advertisement from Perfect Connection Golf Swing which can be found at: http://perfectconnectiongolfswing.com/free-golf-video lessons?utm_source=AdWords&utm_medium=PPC&utm_content=250_06_b&utm_campaign=ICM-US&gclid=CN3kwujH9a0CFULe4AodUH8tuQ. In addition, Cleveland Golf, where you can order golf clubs, women’s clubs and accessories for your clubs. There was also a Berkeley College that can be found at: http://berkeleycollege.edu/lp/2011/Google/Online/?gclid=CKK4kq3I9a0CFULd4AodFCPRtw. The Daily News advertised advertisements were different for each sport, for example on the Super Bowl page there was advertisement for the NY Lottery – Hey, You Never Know Powerball-Power Play, Disney Cruise Line leaving from New York City, Stop&Shop and GLAD – A Small Change can make a Big Difference. Another example is baseball, who advertised Turbo Tax – Federal Free Edition, Nissan 2012 Altima, Facebook – Citi Pond at Bryant Park, Constant Contact- Email Marketing to get you growing and the ASPCA – Help Fight Animal Cruelty! can be found at: https://donate.aspca.org/donate/Donations/TN/Guardian_TN_SMWP.aspx?PlacementID=2868698&utm_source=2011TrueNorth&utm_medium=banner&utm_campaign=AOL.  I did not find any similarities on this level due to the Cambrian News advertised towards their sports of choice to either assist you with improvement or where you can acquire the better product for your sport. In addition, it concentrated on golf, education and health.  The Daily News advertised on many different levels not concentrating on any sport in particular.  It seems as if they placed ads for those companies who could afford to place one.

Overall, I found the comparisons of the two papers interesting because it allows you to see what and who their focus is on a sports level.

“The Evolution of Television in Sport, the Evolutionary Changes in ESPN”

Sports have played a big role throughout the history of television. Without the television, sport fans would not be able to tune into NFL games on Sunday and Monday nights. They wouldn’t be able to sit at home and watch every basketball game played during March Madness.  The television has given everybody around the world a chance to watch some of the biggest and best sporting events that have ever taken place. However, for a long amount of time there was no television show that was dedicated towards just sports. One would be able to find everything they wanted to know about sport statistics in magazines and newspapers but the public could sit down on their couch and visually recap all of the major events that took place the last evening. ESPN changed how sports were portrayed on television forever.

In 1979, ESPN debuted to 1.4 million homes and from this point television and sports history was made, the network gave all sport fans a chance to view all week long for a 24-hour sports channel leader of broadcasts. ESPN is the most popular American sports and some of the biggest games, including Sunday night NFL football.  Television news is one of the best ways for people to know what is going on in the world today. With the momentum of the World Wide Web has gained, many television news station have also added a website to their media coverage. ESPN is no different, the Sports Center where all the viewers can keep up with their favorite sport and ESPN also has a website where viewers can get the same or even more information than in the television broadcast. The ESPN channel gives the viewer exactly what they expect, a quick overview of what happened in the sports world today. The announcers joke around to make the viewer feel like there is a human interaction that is taking place, the announcers also makes it feel like more of an entertainment program then a news program.

In today’s society “reality television” and competitions that involve high risk behavior are extremely popular. In particular, the X Games are a great example of an extreme competition that attracts viewers from every age, race and sex. Its popularity can be directly contributed to the fact that it involves high risk behavior and competition. ESPN, realizing this was a prime viewing audience, brought together several extreme sports and created another commercialized sporting spectacle. While these commercialized adventure and extreme sporting events have had some obvious growing pains, which attract thousands of spectators and viewers while offering fame.
